BOBP IGO - World Water Day: March 22, 2018

World Water Day: March 22, 2018

“Nature for Water” is the theme for World Water Day, 2018. Around 2.1 billion people on the Earth live without safe drinking water; affecting their life and livelihoods. Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6) commits to the world that everyone will be having access to safe water by 2030, targeting on protecting natural resources and reducing pollution.

Celebrating ‘World Water Day’ is to reinforce the need to save water for today as also for posterity. Environmental damage, pollution and climate change are causing ecosystem imbalance and building a green infrastructure has the potential to solve many of these issues. Planting new forests, reconnecting rivers to floodplain wetlands and their restoration will help rebalancing the water cycle. In other words, we need to bring back the green to protect the blue!

On this day, the Bay of Bengal Programme Inter-Governmental Organisation joins the global community in reflecting on the importance of water so that our future generations enjoy this vital resource in the same way as we enjoy today.
