BOBP IGO - Happy Women’s Day 2018

March 8 marks the International Women’s day! We, at the Bay of Bengal Inter-Governmental Organisation, applaud womanhood and wish each and every one of them ‘Happy Women’s Day’. We believe it is not just a day to celebrate the role of women in families, communities, workforce and society, but a day to reflect their achievements and to remember the challenges they face in every sphere of their life.

Women account for 19 percent in the primary sector of fisheries and aquaculture and around 50 percent in the secondary activities (processing, trading, etc.). Their increasing engagement has shown to increase their economic empowerment, self-esteem, confidence and the respect they receive from the family and the society.

In fisheries sector of the developing world, women face indisputable and undeniable challenges- limited access to resources and assets, old-world gender norms, unpaid work, smaller returns than men, etc. To achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, it is important to ensure gender equality. Like ‘family farming’, women can also be the key player in ‘family fishing’.

Not just on ‘Women’s Day’ but every day, get inspired, speak up, and stand against gender inequality as no nation can rise to the heights of glory without women by the side
